Why Aston Law
Aston law graduates possess not only the legal knowledge to succeed but also the business acumen to excel in a highly competitive market. We encourage and support our law students to invest in their personal development and skills set in order to enhance their career prospects and boost their employability.
Law has been taught at postgraduate and undergraduate level within the Business School for many years, giving us the experience necessary to provide a world-class programme that combines legal expertise with commercial intelligence. All of the law programmes offered by Aston Law have been developed in consultation with the legal profession, industry and business.
Our teaching staff are experienced teachers of law and most are qualified lawyers. Our research, consultancy and publications enable our students to learn about the latest national and international developments from staff passionate about the subjects they teach.
Located in Birmingham, one of the most important legal centres outside London, we have strong links with the legal profession. The University is home to the Birmingham Law Society Library and there are many opportunities for our students to observe the law in practice as our campus is close to the Birmingham Law Courts and regular visits are embedded into the programmes. Aston Law also has its own courtroom for practical activities.
The Programme
The LL.M programme is designed for home and international students with a law background who wish to specialise in International Commercial Law. This Aston law programme enables students to deepen and broaden their commercial law portfolio thereby enhancing their career prospects.
The programme is ideal for legal practitioners, for whom the opportunity to study part-time is available. In addition to providing the opportunity to acquire international commercial legal expertise the programme is also designed to equip students with advanced legal research and writing skills.
The programme is delivered using seminars, lectures and tutorials. Students are engaged using a blend of individual and group work, and Aston Law staff use interactive and media-based teaching methods to assist students with their understanding of complex legal issues. Students benefit from the contributions of guest speakers and our strong links with the legal profession. Students on this programme enhance their substantive knowledge of international commercial law through a substantial piece of research leading to the completion of a dissertation in the student’s particular area of interest.
A thriving Student Law Society, Mooting Society and regular networking opportunities complement formal classes.
