Brooklyn Law School (New York City)
Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a leader in teaching excellence, cutting-edge scholarship and practical legal preparation. An independent law school, it offers the Juris Doctor (JD) degree; five joint-degree (JD and Master’s) programs; and the LL.M Program for Foreign-Trained Lawyers.
The LL.M. Program provides foreign-trained lawyers with the knowledge needed to master American legal discourse, to practice law in the United States, and to enhance their lawyering skills for practice in their home countries.
The Program features
- Specialized Study in three areas of law: business law, refugee and immigration law, and intellectual property law. The program also accommodates tailored study plans in other areas of the law.
- Business Law: Located just minutes from Wall Street, BLS has an acclaimed business law faculty, offers a range of advanced courses in the field, and is home to the Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law.
- Refugee and Immigration Law: Our faculty includes authorities who teach and practice in New York City, home to two immigration courts, two asylum offices, and one of the busiest Federal Circuit Court immigration dockets in the country.
- Intellectual Property Law: Our professors are making important contributions to this fast-evolving branch of the law. The curriculum addresses the pressing need for a new generation of tech-savvy lawyers. New York City is home to Silicon Alley and is the world’s media capital, offering opportunities for fieldwork with the very entrepreneurs who are driving change.
- Emphasis on the English Skills needed to successfully draft U.S. legal documents. Law professors are teamed with linguists to oversee legal writing courses and provide individualized support.
- A Bar Examination Course specially-designed for the LL.M. student. It surveys the New York and U.S. law subjects that are tested on the New York State bar examination.
- Academic Enrichment through a broad array of programs and events planned for LL.M. students, including workshops and lectures of particular importance to international lawyers.
- Guaranteed Campus Housing for full-time LL.M. students is available in Feil Hall, a new high-rise only three blocks from the main campus. The costs are highly competitive.
Program Requirements
The LL.M. degree requires completion of 24 credits. The degree can be earned in one year of full-time study or up to two years of part-time enrollment for those with non-student visas. Prospective students must hold the equivalent of a J.D. from a foreign university and non-native English speakers require minimum TOEFL scores.
