Position: Master's and Doctoral Research Students

Salary: R83 000 per annum (LLM) - R105 000 per annum (LLD)

Description:
The University of Stellenbosch Law Faculty invites motivated individuals wishing to pursue full-time LLM or LLD research degrees to apply for bursaries and/or research assistantships. Successful candidates will work within an innovative research project entitled, Combating Poverty, Homelessness and Socio-Economic Vulnerability under the Constitutional Dispensation. Students may work within one of the Project's existing areas of focus or may suggest a new research area provided that it falls within the Project's overall scope. Existing focus areas include:

• Socio-Economic Rights (Prof Sandy Liebenberg)
• Transformative property law and theory (Prof AJ van der Walt)
• Land reform and security of tenure in housing and land (Prof Juanita Pienaar)
• Legal and constitutional interpretation (Prof Lourens du Plessis)
• Equality, redress and poverty relief (Prof Ockert Dupper)
• Administrative justice (Prof Geo Quinot)
• Consolidating and deepening democracy (Prof Henk Botha)

Responsibilities:
Attend workshops and training seminars organized by the Project; assist a designated faculty supervisor with research tasks; develop (with input from your faculty supervisor) an original thesis proposal on a legal topic related to combating poverty and/or overcoming historical trends of social and economic marginalisation; research and write a publication-quality thesis on the approved topic; and successfully fulfil all of the Law Faculty's general requirements for the award of the research degree. Candidates must complete their degree programmes within a maximum of 2 years (LLM) to 3 years (LLD).

Requirements:
Applicants must hold or be in the final stages of completing a law degree from an accredited university. They must demonstrate an aptitude for academic research and a strong commitment to advancing the constitutional values of human dignity, equality and freedom. Upon conditional receipt of a financial award from the project, applicants must also independently fulfil all of the relevant admissions requirements of the Law Faculty and must successfully enrol for full-time study in the intended degree programme.
