About Duke Law School
Duke Law SchoolDuke Law School is one of the nation’s leading law schools, known for its outstanding faculty and scholarship, a curriculum that integrates professional skills development, and a cross-disciplinary approach to learning and teaching. Students come to Duke Law from every state in the U.S. and from all over the world; alumni work in top law firms and companies across the globe. Faculty members are among the nation’s most respected experts in fields including environmental law, international law, intellectual property law, constitutional and public law, and international business and corporate law.

Small and Collaborative
One of the reasons students choose Duke Law is its collaborative environment, where growth is encouraged not only through rigorous scholarship, but also through cooperation and support. Because the school is small, students enjoy close interactions with faculty and fellow students. Professors are dedicated to teaching and are accessible and responsive to students. Their open-door policy encourages students to ask questions, continue discussions beyond the classroom, and seek advice on specialized interests and career paths. Ultimately, students experience a supportive environment where the focus is on training and developing the whole person in an atmosphere that values different perspectives, backgrounds, and orientations.

Life at Duke
Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina, a mid-size city with a cost of living that is half that of some major U.S. cities and a mild climate that facilitates outdoor activity year-round. Part of the Research Triangle, Durham boasts a highly educated population and is home to many of the largest pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms in the United States as well as a growing number of entrepreneurial firms. Situated just a few hours from North Carolina beaches to the east and the Appalachian Mountains to the west, Durham is also just a short flight away from New York City and Washington, D.C. The high quality of life enjoyed by faculty and students is one of the university’s primary attractions.

Duke Law LLM Programs
LLM Program for International Lawyers: The LLM program for international lawyers is a one-year, full-time course of study designed to introduce foreign law graduates to the legal system of the United States and provide opportunities for advanced courses in specialized areas of the law. With the exception of two required courses, Distinctive Aspects of American Law and U.S. Legal Analysis, Research and Writing for International Students, LLM students select courses from the full JD curriculum and sit in class alongside their JD counterparts. LLM students may also take courses in other parts of the university, including the Fuqua School of Business or the Nicholas School of the Environment. Most LLM students at Duke are professionals with two or more years of experience at well-known law firms. They are also judges, prosecutors, academics, and members of government ministries, corporations, or financial institutions. A small number of talented recent law graduates are also admitted each year. Applicants must hold a first degree in law, the equivalent of the JD or LLB degree, from an accredited institution outside the United States.

Master of Laws in Judicial Studies: The Law School’s new LLM in Judicial Studies is an advanced degree program for judges, focusing on the history, institutions, and processes that shape the judiciary and affect judicial decision-making. Judges learn the analytical skills and research approaches necessary for studying judicial institutions and apply those skills to studies of domestic and international judicial institutions, common and emerging legal issues, general judicial practices, and judicial reform efforts. The program takes place over two summers, with state, federal, and international judges studying in residence for four weeks each summer and conducting original research outside the classroom. Applicants must be sitting judges and must have a law degree from an accredited U.S. law school or equivalent foreign university.

Law and Entrepreneurship: The new Law and Entrepreneurship LLM Program combines rigorous coursework with a substantive practicum to prepare lawyers to creatively counsel and lead the innovative ventures of today and tomorrow. Building on Duke Law's existing strengths in the fields of business law and intellectual property law and the university’s strategic ties to entrepreneurial companies located in nearby Research Triangle Park, the program offers advanced courses in subjects such as finance, venture capital, business strategy and intellectual property and includes a semester-long work placement in an entrepreneurial firm. International applicants must hold either a JD or another LLM from an American law school, or must be active members of the bar in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
