Only three years after the BPP College of Professional Studies was first given the power to award degrees, the private institution has been granted University College status by David Willetts, Minister of State for Universities and Skills. BPP Law School offers LLMs in commercial law, financial regulation and compliance, and international business law from it’s law school in Holborn, London, and now becomes part of the only private University College in the UK and the first private institution to be awarded the title since the University of Buckingham over 30 years ago.
In awarding the title to BPP Willetts cited the coalition governments commitment to “promoting a wider range of educational opportunities, delivering a more diverse higher education system and matching the skills employers want.” He went on to praise the work of private sector higher educational establishments, such as BPP, saying he was looking forward to working with BPP to “see a higher education sector that is dynamic and flexible and focussed on the needs of students and employers.”
Carl Lygo, CEO of BPP hailed the University College title as “another major step in BPP’s 34 year history of serving the legal profession.” With the higher education climate set to change within the UK Lygo believes “BPP is a pioneer in this field, and I hope that our unique status and self funding model will lead the way in which other providers will be able to operate in.”
With close links to many of the UK’s top firms and first class facilities, including a specialist law library, BPP is one of the foremost providers of a professional legal education within the UK.
