The University of Surrey
School of Law
With over forty years of experience in teaching and research in law from a national, European and international perspective, the School of Law at The University of Surrey is the ideal place to invest in your future career in law.
The School draws upon the breadth of experience of its members of staff in devising and running imaginative programmes of study for postgraduates and undergraduates, informed by its thriving research programmes and its well established links with the legal profession and with policy makers at national, European and international levels.
The vibrant student community is at the heart of the School’s wide-ranging cultural and research activities and active pastoral and learning support is provided to all students.
Postgraduate Programmes
The School offers a range of both general and specialist theoretically-focused full-time and part-time LLM (Master of Laws) programmes, including specialisms in European Law, International Law, Justice and International Commercial Law.
In addition the School offers part-time distance learning programmes in Employment Law and Environmental Health Law that provide opportunities for professionals to develop or enhance both their practical and theoretical understanding of their practice areas while remaining in the workplace.
The School is proud to be one of the few academic institutions to offer a standard legal qualification at postgraduate level. The MA in Law provides both the first step in qualification as either a solicitor or a barrister in England and Wales, while also offering the opportunity of an internationally-recognised postgraduate qualification.
Programmes and modules have been designed to provide students with opportunities to explore cutting-edge contemporary debates, whether focused on issues of rights and justice or upon aspects of international commerce. Students form the core of the teaching experience, through the research they conduct and through their participation in seminar and tutorial debates. Furthermore, all programmes seek to offer as broad a range of module choices as possible to allow students to develop their own subject specialisms within their chosen field of study.
Research
The School has a strong commitment to scholarship and research, and regards its PhD doctoral research degree programme as central to its research activities. Research and the development of research ideas is a key part of the School’s ethos and is seen as crucial to the success of the School. There are three formal research groups within the School of Law:
• Environmental Regulatory Research Group
• Surrey European Law Unit (SELU)
• Surrey International Law Centre
Within the School there are also active researchers in intellectual property, property law theory and practice, personal and corporate insolvency, corporate governance and corporate responsibility, criminal law and criminal justice, employment and discrimination law, family law, medical law and public law (including US constitutional law).
