University of Washington offers Sustainable International Development LLM

The complexity of global crisis including poverty, hunger, environmental degradation, climate change, overpopulation, transitional political systems and resource distribution are issues with which the LL.M. in Sustainable International Development at the University of Washington engages. These issues often transpire within a complex web of looming national, comparative, and international legal problems. The LLM programme helps bring these relationships into critical focus.  The Sustainable International Development LL.M. programme is the first postgraduate program at a U.S. law school to focus on international development law.

This special law degree which emphasises Sustainable International Development is an effective way to expand one’s basic legal education and acquire the academic and practical expertise that will allow one to develop a knowledge of global development policies and the legal systems that implement them. Students obtain in-depth, interdisciplinary training, taking advantage of the University’s unusually rich course offerings in academic areas including: law, public policy, economics, political science, international studies, sociology, public health, and environmental studies.

Past students in the Law of Sustainable International Development programme have applied their skills and learning in the following capcities:

• Foreign-government ministries;
• Agencies such as the Agency for International Development, the World Bank, and the United Nations;
• Nongovernmental organizations (both those oriented to policy and those implementing projects in the field);
• The private sector.
