Nicole Mohammed, University of NottinghamName: Nicole Mohammed
Age: 30
Home country: Trinidad and Tobago
Institution: University of Nottingham
Studied: LLM in Environmental Law

Before coming to Nottingham to take up her place on the LLM in Environmental Law, Nicole Mohammed was a legal officer at the Environmental Management Authority of Trinidad and Tobago.

"I did a significant amount of research and chose Nottingham because it is ranked as one of the top universities in the UK and is one of the few that offer an environmental law course. I was very interested that it was a popular destination for international students as I wanted to meet people from different places and cultures. The beautiful campus was also a big draw for me as I’m is a bit of a nature buff!

"The course explored many of the international regimes that lie at the heart of the environmental laws enacted and currently being developed in my country, which gave me an international perspective and enhanced the knowledge that I had acquired as a result of my background.

"What I learned on the LLM has been invaluable as it exposed me to extremely interesting and dynamic issues, such as climate change and the international regime that is attempting to tackle it, and has allowed me to take up an internship with FIELD, a dynamic international law chambers specialising in environmental issues."

Daria Davitti, University of NottinghamName: Daria Davitti
Age: 35
Home country: Italy
Institution: University of Nottingham
Studied: LLM in Human Rights Law

Before starting the LLM, Daria Davitti worked as a paralegal in the Commercial Department of Eversheds LLP. However, Daria’s heart did not lie in commercial law and, when offered the opportunity to complete her studies to qualify as a commercial lawyer, she decided instead to follow her heart and come to Nottingham to specialise in international human rights law.

"I chose Nottingham because of its international reputation and excellence in international law and human rights law. I was particularly impressed by the very active Human Rights Law Centre, which offered many students the opportunity for internships. The LLM course gave me the knowledge and preparation necessary to analyse complex human rights situations, and gave me the confidence to work in difficult field operations.

"In January 2006, I came to Afghanistan and started working as Monitoring and Evaluation Assistant/Gender Officer for DACAAR (Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees) and, since November 2006, I have worked as a human rights officer in the Central Regional Office of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

"I was also recently honoured to receive the prestigious Special Excellence Award at the University of Nottingham’s Alumni Awards."

Daria will be undertaking a PhD with the School of Law commencing in September 2008.
