University of Aberdeen Student Profile: Perisuo Dema
'The warmth of staff and their eagerness to attend to students encouraged me to return to the University of Aberdeen for the PhD programme'
Perisuo Dema (pictured) qualified as a Lawyer in Nigeria and worked as a Solicitor for more than 15 years before enrolling at Aberdeen University to undertake the Masters of Law in Oil & Gas Law. He commenced his studies in September 2007 and graduated with the Masters of Law with Commendation in November 2008. He has now embarked on a PhD at the University. His topic is: Contracts with Changing Sovereigns: the competing principles of Pacta Sunt Servanda and Rebus sic stantibus in the context of disputed maritime boundaries and offshore petroleum concessions in West African Atlantic waters.
Perisuo says: 'In coming to Aberdeen University after a three year stint as the Legal Assistant on Legislative Matters to Nigeria’s then Minister of Energy, I have found tremendous professional satisfaction in my choice of University. The warmth of staff and their eagerness to attend to students, as well as the petroleum industry relevant modules, encouraged me to return to the University of Aberdeen for the PhD programme. In addition, the network of international students on the postgraduate law programme has helped me to form what is soon to be registered under UK law as the International Federation of Upstream Petroleum Investment Managers, Arbitrators and Lawyers.'
