Global Bursaries

Sharian Melissa Hanson, LLM with a focus on Public Law, Emory Law

Emory Law Bursary WinnerEmory Law“I was extremely ecstatic and grateful when I was informed of the award from Postgrad Solutions.”

Sharian Melissa Hanson is a 29-year-old Jamaican student and she is studying a Master of Laws with a focus on Public Law at Emory Law in Atlanta in the USA. She was delighted to be selected as a recipient of a Global US LLM Study Bursary 2014, saying, “I was extremely ecstatic and grateful when I was informed of the award from Postgrad Solutions. Clearly the financial assistance is wonderful and when I was informed that only a handful of persons received awards I felt extremely grateful and happy to be a recipient.”

Sharian got her initial Bachelor of Laws Degree at the University of the West Indies. Describing her academic journey towards the LLM program she explains, “I had a particular interest in constitutional law and the system of governance. Following my graduation from law school I was employed to a government agency. My area of practice largely dealt with rights issues, and I experienced firsthand how critical the state is, in ensuring these rights are upheld through due process and other laws and policies that protect a state’s citizens. This experience encouraged me to pursue studies in this area.”

She is really enjoying her Master of Laws course – and her highlight to date is participating in the mentorship program. She explains, “This program pairs students with an attorney and the students and attorney work together on topical legal issues.” She chose to study at Emory Law because of its outstanding ranking and reputation as a top university in the USA. She was also attracted by the LLM programs on offer at this law school and they way they are taught via a practical approach to learning, through clinics, externships, seminars and workshops to name a few.

Emory University is located in Atlanta, Georgia, which Sharian feels is an ideal location to be a student. She says, “It offers the best of both worlds. I enjoy living in Atlanta, because of the city life – the area is very diverse and there is a lot of entertainment. However, the outskirts of the city gives that homely feeling and allows me to escape the chaos of the city. I also love the greenery of Atlanta, especially on campus. Emory is a beautiful campus with a historic and modern feeling all at once.” Sharian finds our website llmstudy.com to be a very useful tool for prospective and current LLM students. She says, “I think the website is very informative. It provides prospective international students with useful information about courses of study and other aspects critical to graduate studies.”

Good luck with your studies Sharian – we know you’re going to really enjoy your time at Emory Law!

Shannon Hendricks, LLM in International Human Rights, Northwestern University

Bursary WinnerNorthwestern Uni“When I found out I had won the £500 I felt really blessed! I am so grateful to Postgrad Solutions!”

Shannon Hendricks is a 27-year-old LLM student from Jamaica and is the lucky recipient of a Global US LLM Bursary 2013. She has had a passion for human rights for the last few years, and is now lucky enough to be studying an LLM in International Human Rights at Northwestern University in Illinois.

She says of her LLM program, “I am having an absolutely amazing time. It really is a well-crafted program with the perfect balance of theoretical and clinical work. I have gotten exposure to women, children and gender issues worldwide, refugee and asylum matters both internationally and in the US and I have also studied the human rights systems in the Americas, Europe and Africa.”

Shannon did her formative legal training at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Norman Manley Law School (NMLS). She then chose to study at Northwestern because it fitted her requirements of studying human rights in the USA perfectly. As soon as she read the details of the LLM course it stood out to her as being the right place for her to continue her studies.

She really enjoys living in Illinois saying, “I am mainly based in Chicago which really is a fantastic city! It’s very clean and scenic with a lot of history too. There are so many things to do with some phenomenal jazz and down south blues clubs. Absolutely amazing!”

Chicago is clearly a great city to be a student in, as Shannon continues to explain, “What is even more awesome is that a lot of activities are free or discounted for Northwestern students. So you can go to museums, restaurants, clubs, parks etc on a budget, and Northwestern students ride the buses and trains for free!”

But despite these freebies and discounts for Northwestern students, the £500 is still really handy. Shannon enthuses, “When I found out I had been given the bursary I actually said to my relatives, ‘My Creator sure is looking out for me! He sends what I need when I need it!’.”
