The LLM programme
LLM – full or part time
We offer a broadly based postgraduate taught programme leading to the award of the degree of Master of Laws. Students can choose to pursue an LLM that specialises in one of five named routes or can pursue non-specialised legal study choosing from any of the modules available.
LLM (Canon Law) – part time only
This route focuses on the canon law of the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches, and on state law applicable to those Churches.
LLM (Commercial Law) – full time only
This route offers a range of English and comparative commercial law subjects, which are studied from an international perspective, with an emphasis on the international agreements that operate in the commercial law field.
LLM (European Legal Studies) – full time only
This route provides students with the opportunity to study law in a European, comparative and international context.
LLM (Human Rights Law) – full time only
(Subject to validation – please check www.law.cardiff.ac.uk.)
This route aims to provide a sound knowledge of the theory and the legal rules applicable to international human rights treaties and their domestic counterparts.
LLM (Legal Aspects of Medical Practice) – full or part time
This route provides a sound knowledge and critical appreciation of the legal rules applicable to the practice and administration of healthcare.
Programme structure
The full-time LLM routes run over 12 months and comprise two parts. Part 1 is studied between September and May; four modules are selected from a range of options. Each module is assessed by examination, essay or other approved methods. Part 2 consists of the completion of a 15,000-word dissertation, which is submitted in September on completion of the student’s period of study.
There are two part-time routes available on the LLM (Legal Aspects of Medical Practice). The part-time weekly route takes place over two years on one fixed day of the week during the University semesters. The residential weekend route takes place over eight weekends running over two years. The part-time LLM (Canon Law) route also takes place over eight weekends running over two years. In the case of the part-time LLM routes, the dissertation is submitted in December on completion of the student’s period of study.
