About the Law Faculty
University College Cork, situated in south-west Ireland, is a progressive, dynamic university of over 17,000 students. The University has a current enrolment of over 3,000 students at postgraduate level which includes students from 75 countries worldwide. A dedicated postgraduate research library, opened in June 2007, provides high level access to information resources for students and researchers at UCC.
Cork, Ireland’s second city is attractive and cosmopolitan and is home to a busy and dynamic legal profession and a large student population.
The Faculty of Law at University College Cork is one of the original faculties of the University (which was founded in 1845). The Faculty offers three taught LLM programmes – the LLM; the LLM e-Law and the LLM in Criminal Justice. In addition, the Faculty is home to a vibrant research degree programme, with highly successful LLM by Research and PhD programmes.
The Law Faculty UCC provides a dynamic research environment with a proud tradition of scholarship within the University and a close and mutually beneficial relationship with the legal professions. Students are provided with a high-quality educational experience where commitment to academic excellence is combined with the development of student skills. The Faculty offers expert and committed supervision across a wide range of areas.
There are 25 full-time staff members who have strong research records and contribute actively to legal scholarship, engaging with policy reform and analysis of legal issues nationally and internationally.

Programmes Offered
Research Degrees (LLM by Research and PhD in Law):
The Law Faculty highly successful research degree programmes include students from countries such as Lebanon, Namibia, USA, Turkey, Spain, France, Israel, Nigeria, Iran and Portugal as well as Ireland. The Law Faculty has achieved great success in attracting funding for its research students. Applicants for these research programmes must provide a detailed research proposal and should contact the Faculty of Law directly.
Taught Programmes
LLM degree: This degree offers students a wide choice of options across a range of areas. Students may either focus their interest in one area, for example commercial or international law or choose a broad variety of legal subjects. Students also have the opportunity to pursue a thesis in an area of interest under supervision of an expert in the chosen field.
LLM e-Law: This specialised LLM builds upon the UCC Faculty of Law’s considerable research and teaching expertise in the field of e-Law and information technology. It also draws on Ireland’s position as a key player in the Information Technology Sector.
LLM Criminal Justice: This degree offers a core clinical component providing the opportunity to pursue theoretical inquiry while experiencing the reality of law in practice. Through a well-established network with various criminal justice agencies, a series of placements are organised throughout the year which enables students to explore the perspectives of key actors in the criminal justice process.
Entry Requirements: Applicants must normally possess a degree in Law or a cognate subject with at least Second Class Honours Grade 1 (2:1) (or equivalent) or have such other relevant third level education qualifications and/or professional experience as, in the opinion of the Faculty of Law, qualifies the candidate to undertake the prescribed programme of research or advanced studies. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence that they have obtained a score of at least 6.5 in IELTS or 575 in TOEFL tests, or equivalent.
Length of Programmes: All LLM programmes can be completed over one year full-time or two years part-time.

Application Deadlines:
- For taught LLM programmes the normal deadline for applications is 1 May but late applications may be entertained at the discretion of the Faculty of Law
- Applications for Research programmes are accepted throughout the academic year.
