History
Old Main BuildingThe picturesque town of Stellenbosch is situated in the heart of the South African winelands, about 50 kilometers from the city of Cape Town. This town is also home to one of the oldest universities in South Africa: The history of Stellenbosch University dates back to the opening of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium in 1866. The Faculty of Law was established in 1921. 

At the centre of Stellenbosch, at the corner of Victoria Street and Ryneveld Street, is the Old Main Building, home to the Stellenbosch Faculty of Law. Inaugurated in 1886 as the main building of the Victoria College, this building also serves as a monument to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the town by Simon van der Stel in 1686.

The Faculty of Law
Stellenbosch University is regarded as one of the leading research and tertiary education institutions in Southern Africa. The relatively small and intimate Faculty is regarded as a very prestigious Law School in Southern Africa - only 250 first year students are selected for each academic year at undergraduate level. In total the Faculty consists of no more than 1300 students in a particular academic year. The Faculty furthermore boasts with numerous successful and high profile alumni, as well as highly respected academic staff members who are regarded as international experts in their respective areas of research and interest.

LLM Programmes
The Faculty offers a LLM by course work as well as a LLM in International Trade Law. The Master of Laws (LLM) programme offers a wide variety of modules from which students may choose, including: Legal Medicine, International Criminal Law, various modules in Labour Law, International Business Transactions, Intellectual Property Law, Comparative Apartment Ownership, International Commercial Arbitration, International Law and Children’s Rights, Comparative Private Law, Public Law Aspects of International Trade, Competition Law, Information Technology Law, Advanced Company Law, International Tax Law and Advanced South African Human Rights Law. The course content for the programme in International Trade Law is a set programme.

For both programmes students are required to complete four modules and to submit a short research paper.

The Faculty will consider applicants for either the February or the July intake of each academic year. The duration of the programmes is one year and the language of instruction is English.
