Study a cutting-edge and innovative LLM Programme in rapidly developing areas of law all of which are accredited by the Law Society for Continuing Professional Development. We offer full-time (one year) and part-time (two years) study modes and you can start in either September or January. Our multi-jurisdictional legal resources can be accessed remotely from anywhere in the world via our Studynet intranet system. Take advantage of extensive work placement opportunities through our close liaison with the regional legal community and our innovative Internship option, or gain valuable experience working in our pro bono Law Clinic. Develop research interests via the Centre for International Law and writing for the Hertfordshire Law Journal.

The Law School is based in the cathedral city of St Albans, just a 20 minute train journey from London. We are at the heart of the legal community, and a short walk from Crown, County and Magistrates courts plus the shops, cafes and bars of this historic city. Alongside the LLM Degree, an LLB Undergraduate degree, a (part-time) Legal Practice Course and a Graduate Diploma in Law (CPE) are also offered for study.

LLM
The School of Law offers LLM programmes that focus on rapidly developing areas of law. Current available named pathways include:

LLM in International Law
LLM in Commercial Law
LLM in E-Commerce Law
LLM in Maritime Law
LLM in Telecommunications Law

Joint pathways are also available as is a general LLM in Law.

Further module options include: Banking Law, International Financial Services, M-Commerce, Data Protection and Cyber-Security, Public International Law, Cyber Piracy and Virtual Property, Intellectual Property, Company Law, International Commercial Law and Conflicts of Law.

New Internship Module: Furthermore, instead of the traditional dissertation, there is also the option during the summer months (subject to a standard application procedure) to apply for an Internship. This consists of a work placement in a local law-based firm and assessment based on assignments stemming from the placement. This pioneering module offers a practical and relevant learning experience and seeks to provide a bridge between the lecture theatre and employment.

Teaching and research University of Hertfordshire
We have over 40 members of academic staff all of whom share the same enthusiastic approach to the teaching of law and academic legal research. Half are experienced academic lawyers and half have joined the School from the legal profession.

Alongside excellent teaching, the School of Law supports legal research as it is an important component of academic work, underpinning and informing teaching and contributing to the knowledge base of students, practitioners and academics.

Our staff have published articles in a wide range of legal journals, and several members of staff have written and edited student and practitioner textbooks. We have a strong research record in commercial and international law via our Centre for International Law which supports research in these areas and publishes its own legal journal ‘The Hertfordshire Law Journal’ twice a year as well as articles and leading textbooks. Students are always encouraged to develop research interests and many contribute articles to our Journal.

The Law Clinic
Gaining valuable legal experience whilst still a law student can be difficult, but the UH Law Clinic enables you to do just that, and to become involved with community legal projects. It is the only truly regional University pro bono advice centre and is run by our law students, under supervision of experienced solicitors. As a student adviser with the clinic you have the opportunity to provide legal advice and assistance to real clients, undertaking client interviews and legal research in a wide variety of areas including family law, employment law and property law.

The Law Clinic also runs “Streetlaw” projects, which involve students delivering interactive presentations or workshops to community groups on a wide range of issues, helping them to be more aware of their rights. The students have recently been working with local secondary schools looking at issues as diverse as citizenship, youth justice and consumer rights.

Student legal life at the Law School
We have our own courtroom where students refine their mooting skills, and compete both internally and also, very successfully, externally in national mooting competitions. During the 2007/8 campaign the School won the Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition (the oldest and largest of its kind in the country) defeating teams from the BPP, Oxford Brookes, Birkbeck, Glasgow University and London School of Economics before reaching the final against City, which was held in the President’s Court of the Royal Courts of Justice, with Lord Steyn as the lead Judge. The winning students won the prestigious Silver Mace, £1000 and a mini-pupillage.

There is an active debating society and we hold a vibrant Public Lecture Series, which welcomes eminent speakers to give guest lectures on the law and surrounding contemporary issues. These lectures are free of charge and open to all members of the public. The Student Law Society also organise a wide range of social events and parties. You can see more about the life of the Law School via our electronic newsletters, all available on our School website.
