The University

The School of Law
The School of Law is one of the most popular law schools in the UK. Rated by the UK Government as ‘internationally outstanding’ (graded 5A on a scale of 1–5*) for research in its last Research Assessment Exercise and as ‘excellent’ for teaching in its last Teaching Quality Assessment, the School offers our students the opportunity to specialise in their chosen area of law in a stimulating and challenging environment. The School has UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) ‘1+3’ recognition for its MA in Socio-legal and Criminological Research. A number of well-established research centres in environmental law, human rights law, public procurement law and treaty studies enhance the research culture of the School.

Programmes on offer
LLM
In addition to our general LLM programme, specialist LLM degrees are offered in the following subject areas:

MA in Socio-legal and Criminological Research
This course is designed for students intending to progress to research careers or research degrees in socio-legal studies or criminology. The MA provides interdisciplinary training through core modules in qualitative and quantitative research methods, philosophy of social sciences, and legal research methods, augmented by optional subjects (including relevant LLM modules) pertinent to a particular candidate’s substantive research interests.

MSc in Law and Environmental Science
This unique interdisciplinary programme explores the strong interplay between scientific knowledge and law. It is specifically designed to provide students from a science background with a quantitative understanding of environmental issues. Law courses provide a wider understanding of the European Community and international legal dimensions of environmental issues.

Research degrees
The Master of Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualifications are offered under expert supervision, with excellent research facilities.

Teaching and assessment
We offer a wide and diverse range of over 50 full and half options. Many of our academic staff are leading international experts in their field. The taught element is followed by a dissertation.

Teaching is normally by seminars in each option. Students are encouraged and expected to participate in seminars, which is a reflection of the interactive nature of the programme. Assessment is by essay, examination or a combination of both.
