About the Law Department
The Law Department is situated in Headington Hill Hall, and is part of the School of Social Sciences and Law. It is committed to supporting its students through both a personal tutor and a student support co-ordinator, who provide academic and personal support. International students benefit from the additional support of International Student Advisers during their time in Oxford. All students have full access to a broad range of university-wide facilities, including state-of-the-art sports facilities, modern libraries and computer centres.
About our staff
Research is fundamental to our LLM programmes. All members of the LLM course team are active researchers and we encourage you to become involved in our areas of research. Our research interests span many different areas of law and a wide range of jurisdictions, such as the United Kingdom, South Africa, Turkey, various European jurisdictions and China and the Far East. A sample of some of our current research projects includes: the interaction between domestic and international criminal jurisdictions, the global arms trade, the World Trade Organisation and dispute settlement, intellectual property in the current information age, EU-China investment relations, the impact of international and regional human rights instruments on Turkish civil law, and regional integration and the European Union.

Whichever LLM programme you choose, you will have a unique opportunity to expand your knowledge and understanding of international law and to develop the skills and expertise needed for a career in today’s global arena. The LLM programme team at Oxford Brookes offer a dynamic learning environment in which you are encouraged to debate the issues and share experiences from around the world. Each LLM programme features two compulsory modules: International Law and Advanced Legal Research Methods. These modules introduce you to the international legal system and provide you with an opportunity to develop core skills in research. You will then take a further three modules, one of which is likely to be compulsory. During the summer, you will conduct research for your Dissertation.

Teaching and research ratings
The Law Department received the top rating of ’excellent’ in the UK government’s Teaching Quality Assessment and its research was awarded a ’4’ rating (on a scale of 1-5*) by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) indicating its national and international quality.
Career prospects
A knowledge of international law is becoming increasingly important not only for those seeking a career in law, but also for those wishing to work in business, in government and for NGOs involved in development and humanitarian work. Oxford Brookes University has an excellent record of graduate employment. Our law graduates enjoy careers in international law, international trade and marketing, the international financial services industry, the United Nations and other international institutions, and have also entered management positions in multinational companies and governmental, and non-governmental organisations.
Entry requirements
We require an upper second-class (2.1) honours degree (or an equivalent qualification from other countries) in any subject. If your first language is not English, we will also require proof that you have a sufficient command of the English language: a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or TOEFL scores of 575 (paper-based), 232 (computer-based) or 89 (internet-based). Applicants with an IELTS score of 5.5 (or its TOEFL equivalent) may be eligible for entry to the LLM with Pre-Master’s programme.
