Bangor School of Law is an innovative and expanding school reflecting expertise and commitment to high level postgraduate teaching. Our programmes are innovative and responsive to the changes and developments in the global legal environment of the 21st century where business, trade, society and our way of life is constantly changing. Legal systems and regulations must also adapt and evolve, and Bangor law degrees address and reflect these changes.

Our team of enthusiastic and multilingual staff have taught in the UK and other European countries and our courses reflect this international expertise. Our programmes are accredited by The Law Society and Bar Council and this mark of quality confirms the high standard of education delivered at our School. As well as offering joint masters programmes with Bangor Business School, Bangor University Law School also offers its own range of undergraduate, Masters and research degrees. 3 prestigious scholarships are offered annually towards the pursuit of a PhD.

SCHOOL OF LAW

Staff
Bangor University was founded 125 years ago and has attracted a top team of international legal scholars onto its School of Law teaching and research staff, comprising graduates of some of the world’s leading Universities, including: University of Cambridge, London School of Economics, College of Europe (Belgium) and Central University of Finance and Economics (China).

School of Law staff are active legal researchers, many with established reputations in their chosen fields. For example, recent publications by the Law School staff include law books in the area of European Law and Competition Law (‘Antitrust’) published by Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press, as well as articles published in leading international law journals. Several staff members are also on the Editorial Boards of several prestigious international law journals.

Distinguished Professors Programme
Students benefit from the School of Law Distinguished Professors Programme whereby law professors from other prestigious Universities join the teaching staff to present specialised seminars to students at certain times during the academic year. During this past year, the Law School has hosted Visiting Scholars from Australia, France and the USA.

Facilities
In addition to the extensive Library and Computing services provided throughout the university, the School of Law provides a range of Law-specific resources which includes an extensive Law Library which has benefited from substantial investment and is overseen by a dedicated Law Librarian. It provides printed and electronic sources to meet the needs of its users and reflect current teaching and research within the School of Law.

Joint Degrees
On the MBA and MA joint programmes, seminars are conducted both by Professors of the School of Law and Bangor Business School which is renowned in the UK and overseas for it’s expertise in Banking. These jointly offered MBA and MA programmes and our LLM degrees, are delivered in Bangor’s state of the art teaching facilities, funded by the European Union.

Course Overview 

The MBA in Banking and Law will develop knowledgeable and capable banking executives and banking lawyers who will move quickly into key positions in the financial sector. The degree focuses on the financial and strategic management of banks and other financial institutions as well as the increasingly complex legal and regulatory structures within which banks and their executives have to operate. The legal issues will cover a wide range of topics at UK, EU and international level with which a modern banker needs to be familiar. As well as the general principles of International Banking Law, you will also choose from a wide range of law and business options. You will gain practical insight and skills in a range of financial, legal and strategic management topics in the supply of international financial services as well as key Law subjects which have a direct impact on Banking practice. Case studies and contemporary issues figure prominently in the programme.

The MBA in Law and Management emphasises both professional and vocational development as well an awareness of key legal and regulatory issues that play a central role in the successful management of modern enterprises of all types and sizes. You will develop an understanding of higher-level managerial skills and concepts, and their application in practical situations. You will have the opportunity to examine the law and regulation that affects business in a wide range of key areas. An important objective is to provide relevant analytical training in the latest strategic, managerial, legal and commercial developments in both public and private sectors. In this specifically tailored MBA programme, Bangor Business School and the Bangor School of Law offer candidates an innovative suite of key Management and Law subjects.

The MA in Banking and Law is an interdisciplinary programme that will enable the student to study key legal and regulatory developments affecting the financial sector. This includes the regulation of financial services, security instruments, corporate finance, arbitration and other issues affecting modern banks at UK, EU and international level. As well as the general principles of International Banking Law, you will also choose from a wide range of law and business.The programme will equip candidates with higher level knowledge in both the Banking and Law areas, as global Banking practice today is heavily influenced by the Law. The MA degree is suitable for those who wish to adopt a predominantly non-quantitative approach to their studies.

The LLM in Commercial Law is an exciting, commercially-relevant programme that provides an in-depth curriculum and thorough training in the law, policy and legal regulation that governs some key areas of commerce and industry worldwide. This course is particularly relevant for students who anticipate careers in business and industry, or intend to specialise in legal practice in the commercial area, and wish to develop expertise and hands-on ability to address and manage business development within a legal framework.

The LLM in Law and Devolved Governments considers the many aspects of the process of the devolution of powers from central governments to regional governments. With the devolution of areas such as Health Education, Housing, Planning and Social Services to regional governments, the mechanics and processes of devolved fields will also evolve and change. This is creating a demand for personnel who have thorough legal knowledge and expertise to plan, lead and manage effectively within these fields. Public bodies, commercial and voluntary organisations need to develop their understanding of the mechanics and consequences of policy and legislation in devolved fields for reasons of compliance and in order to operate successfully in regions of devolved regimes.

The LLM in Law offers candidates the opportunity of pursuing their own areas of interest in Law, which may involve a broad selection of topics, or focussing on one specialised area of law. Modules include commercial law, employment law, corporate governance, banking law, devolution law etc.

Entry Requirements and application procedures
A 2(ii) honours degree or equivalent in Law or a related degree is required for entry. Applications from students with unrelated degrees will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Alternatively, possession of a suitable professional qualification or relevant practical experience may be accepted. In general, however, all applicants are judged on their individual merits. Age, work experience and other factors are also considered.
