About the Law School
Founded in 1952, the School of Law is proud of its half century of continuous commitment to the highest standards in legal research and education. It is one of only eight Schools in the UK to have received the highest possible government rankings for academic excellence in teaching and in legal research. Programmes
In response to the changes in the global market and to compliment the growing expertise and resources within the School we are proud to offer the following opportunities for postgraduate legal study. Over a 12 month period of full time study or part time over 24 months, students will be assessed in 4 modules and submit a supervised dissertation in a subject of their choice.
Selection and Admission
The normal entry requirements are Upper Second Class Bachelors (Undergraduate) Degree in Law. Account can also be taken of practical experience within the relevant field of study.
English Language Requirements (where applicable)
IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 625 (paper-based)/263 (computer-based)/106 (internet based).
A score of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600/250/100 together with attendance at the five week pre-sessional course on English legal language and skills will be accepted.
LLM Pre-sessional Course
It is strongly advised that students who have not previously studied in the UK undertake this course. It is particularly important for those who are unfamiliar with the common-law system. LLM Master of Laws – an unrestricted choice across the full range of modules offered, providing a flexible academic programme, tailored to your individual interests.
LLM (Commercial and Corporate Law) - providing an extended knowledge and enhanced critical understanding of issues within the ever changing world of Commercial and Corporate Law.
LLM (European Law) - aims to enhance employability opportunities in any of the many areas for which those trained in EU law are in great demand.
LLM (European Comparative Property Law) - through research-led teaching, students will study and compare the land laws of Europe, in particular: European land law (the law of EEA-30), land laws of Europeans states, secured commercial financing, trusts succession and private taxation and the legal regulation of fraud and money laundering.
LLM (International Law) - an advanced course of study which provides students with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the far reaching impact of international treaties, agreements and covenants on domestic law.
LLM (International Business Law) - covers a comprehensive range of modules relevant to international trade law, business law, competition law, corporate governance, intellectual property and legal regulation.
LLM (Maritime Law) – expect great exposure to the highest quality research led teaching when undertaking modules of study in Admiralty Law, Carriage of Goods by Sea, International Law of the Sea, International Marine & European Environmental (Liability) Law and Marine Insurance.
LLM (Information Technology and Commerce) - considerable attention is paid both to the emerging EU framework for the promotion of e-commerce and the information society, and the involvement of international institutions such as WIPO, WSIS and TRIPS in the regulation of IT and IP law.
Assessments and rankings
The School holds the highest possible Government ratings for both teaching (Quality Assurance Agency, 2008) and legal research (Research Assessment Exercise, 2001).
