Durham University Law chairwoman appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

On 28 July 2008, the United Nations General Assembly confirmed by consensus, Judge Navanethem (Navi) Pillay’s appointment as the fifth High Commissioner for Human Rights - the leading UN human rights official. Judge Navanethem (Navi) Pillay, Chairwoman of the Durham Law School Centre for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Civil Law by the University in 2007.
