Law schools in Germany offer two types of LLM programs.
One type are the LLM programs taught in German and these prepare internationally trained lawyers to work in German Bar Exam, and the other type is an international law program and these are conducted in English.
German law school experience
German lawyers have some of the most extensive law educational experiences in the world and gain a broad education that covers many areas while they are at law school. Lectures can have 200 to 500 students at a time and most students are expected to be highly self-motivated. Although there have been recent changes with the European Union's Bologna Process to ensure that bachelor and masters level courses are all of a similar level across Europe, many Germany universities and law schools have been resistant to changing their courses. This is partly because German legal professors regard the legal education they offer as the most in-depth in the world, but some academics are moving toward methods employed by many American law schools with a more Socratic way of teaching. An LLM program in Germany can last from one to two years studying full-time.
Subject areas available
There are several different areas of the law that can be studied in English in Germany. International Business Law and International Arbitration can both be studied at masters level. There are also LLM courses aimed at students from specific parts of the world, such as Asia, to study subjects such as Finance Law combining Asian, German and European Law.
The tuition fees for an LLM program in Germany depends largely on the law school and the particular LLM program as in many cases LLM programs in German have no tuition fees payable or at the very least a relatively low amount. For LLM programs in English tuition fees are from around €500 per semester to €18,000 per year.
LLMs at German law schools
Here is a table showing law schools that feature in world rankings and whether they offer their LLM programs in English.
PLEASE NOTE: As a result of Brexit, from Autumn 2021 postgraduate students from the European Union studying at a UK university will be charged the same tuition fees as international students. UK students studying their postgraduate course at a European university are also likely to incur higher tuition fees than their EU counterparts. It is advisable to check with the individual universities in the UK and Europe for up-to-date information on tuition fees for all postgraduate programs.
