University of Aberdeen School of LawPostgraduate study of law at the University of Aberdeen offers students the opportunity to experience one of the oldest universities in Europe. The University was founded in 1495 and combines ancient tradition with the best in modern scholarship and study facilities.

Study Facilities
Law has been taught at Aberdeen for over 500 years. The School of Law is based on a campus within the historical surroundings of King’s College, but is housed in a modern purpose-built building with an extensive library that contains more than 55,000 volumes and has access to a wide range of electronic resources. Access to online materials like Lexis and Westlaw is excellent, and this, together with wide-ranging periodicals and books, enables current developments in the law to be monitored.

There are around 40 members of academic staff in the School who are engaged in LLM teaching or administration. There are approximately 800 undergraduate students and there are currently around 300 LLM and PhD students from many parts of the world. In addition to this, there are approximately 140 postgraduate students taking a bridging course for entry into the practice of law in Scotland.

Teaching and Research
The teaching staff have extensive links with the legal world as consultants, researchers, directors, and members of public, professional and private bodies, commissions and societies. All are involved in research and writing, and in contributing to academic and professional societies and conferences. The School of Law has produced works of internationally recognised scholarship, as well as standard texts that are used both by students and practising lawyers.

80% of the School’s publications submitted for assessment in the latest research assessment exercise (2008) are recognised internationally as being of excellence or of significance and originality. The School is also ranked in the top-ten law schools in the UK by The Good University Guide.

Teaching is on a modular, credit-based pattern. This flexible structure enables students to combine courses to suit their own needs and particular areas of interest.

Careers
Employment prospects for Aberdeen graduates are excellent, with the School ranking 2nd in the UK according to The Times Good University Guide 2010. Graduates have moved on to professional practice in the private or public sectors. Some have secured posts in the academic world, and several have taken jobs with quasi-governmental agencies or have offered consultancy services. A number proceed with further study for a PhD.

The City of Aberdeen
Aberdeen, Scotland’s third largest city, is a prosperous and attractive city of 220,000. It is cosmopolitan and has a rich cultural life, yet is still small enough to maintain a sense of community. Students have easy access to excellent recreational facilities at the University and in the city. From the bustling city centre, it is just a short distance to the tranquillity of the nearby hills, countryside and golden sandy beaches of one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland.
