Law School

Our LLM program
delivers a dynamic education by renowned faculty at our top US university. You will gain strategic attention and comprehensive skills through our personalized guidance and mentoring. We equip you with gaining knowledge in this information rich era, innovating within a modern and global economy, and communicating effectively across cultures. At BC Law, LLM students take JD classes alongside JD students, for a fully immersive academic and communal experience.

Our program features flexibility, breadth, and depth: We will guide you to build a personalized set of courses to deepen your knowledge, skills and network. You can also specialize your studies by pursuing a concentration in one of our five concentration areas.

No matter what path you choose, you will benefit from working with professors renowned for their academic and real-world experience and from our expert team of advisors.

Because our program immerses students in the US legal system while preparing them to thrive in an increasingly global legal community, our graduates pursue diverse career opportunities: private practice, government service, the judiciary, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and legal scholarship, for example.

Concentrations:

Business and commercial law

  • Our faculty includes:
  • Kent Greenfield, a leader in the stakeholder school of corporate law
  • International trade scholar Frank Garcia, who teaches WTO law and international business transactions on several continents
  • Renee Jones, an internationally known expert in corporate and securities law
  • Brian Quinn, the editor of an influential M&A blog
  • Natalya Shnitser, a leader in retirement security and the regulation of financial intermediaries

Environmental law
Environmental litigation pioneer Zygmunt Plater and international law scholar David Wirth headline our faculty in this area.

Human rights
Our interdisciplinary Center for Human Rights and International Justice—co-directed by Daniel Kanstroom—together with a range of courses in our concentration in human rights law, nurtures a new generation of scholars and practitioners, helping them acquire skills across key disciplines while exchanging best practices with faculty and students working in the field. Our International Human Rights Practicum gives students hands-on experience with amicus briefs and on-site visits to the InterAmerican Court of Human Rights.

Intellectual property
Our exciting concentration covers topics in copyright, trademark, and patent law, and incorporates electives in antitrust law, cyber law, and technology licensing. Our faculty includes:

  • Alfred Yen, who directs our program on Emerging Enterprises and Business Law
  • Joseph Liu, whose work explores the impact of digital technology on copyright law and markets
  • Patent law and antitrust law scholar David Olson, who has examined the legal uncertainties in recent patent laws and the market behavior of actors with patent portfolios

Taxation
Some of the country's most influential tax law scholars give students an important grounding in US and international tax concepts —including Diane Ring, who examines cross-border tax arbitrage and international tax relations, James Repetti, author of groundbreaking tax equity work, and Shu-Yi Oei, a well known expert in tax policy and economic regulation. The program also features a Tax Policy Workshop that showcases emerging scholarship in the field.

Clinical Opportunities
Upon qualification, LLM students can participate in several clinical opportunities, including the Innocence Clinic, the Human Rights Practicum and the Immigration Law Clinic.

Areas of Special Focus:
We have significant strengths in international law, constitutional law, gender and family law, movement lawyering, cyberlaw and policy, and legal history. LLM students can cross-register for courses in Boston College’s other graduate schools and university departments such as the Carroll School of Business, The School of Social Work and the Lynch School of Education.
