From the cinema and music industries to the pharmaceutical and information technology sectors, intellectual property rights are everywhere and becoming increasingly controversial. Despite being private law rights, their long history of harmonisation through public international law-making has meant that they have played a significant role in:

  • economic integration

  • cultural homogenisation

  • technical diffusion

  • the globalisation of Western law.

Birkbeck’s LLM degree in International Intellectual Property Law is an innovative research-led programme ideal for both law and non-law graduates, including those already in employment as legal practitioners. You will gain the theoretical and practical knowledge crucial in understanding:

  • the role of international intellectual property protection in the creation and operation of markets

  • its consequent political, social and cultural impact.

This LLM focuses on the critical analysis of intellectual property law as an international phenomenon. We draw from a range of primary and secondary sources to address contemporary debates in intellectual property law and policy with attention to the history, theory and political economy of intellectual property law. You will learn to transfer your understanding of complex problems and regulatory responses to different contexts and critically evaluate legal, regulatory and policy proposals concerning intellectual property.

  • This is a broad-based and highly flexible course that gives you the opportunity to gain an advanced legal degree in the heart of London and focus your studies on aspects of the international intellectual property regime that interest you.

  • You will have access to a stimulating programme of extra-curricular seminars from expert academics and legal and policy professionals working in diverse areas, with important opportunities for networking and professional development.

  • Birkbeck is a hub of expertise on creative, innovative and critical thinking and Birkbeck School of Law has a strong tradition of research across its departments of Law and Criminology. Our academic staff are international authorities in their respective fields.

  • You will benefit from our School of Law’s vibrant annual cycle of inspiring expert-led public lectures and conferences, in which school and cross-school research centres and institutes play a key role.

  • Our city centre campus is in Bloomsbury WC1, a lively student-centred place that's home to a number of universities and other colleges of the University of London, and you will be able to take advantage of their rich research collections as well as Birkbeck Library, which has a strong collection in critical, theoretical and interdisciplinary legal studies, including access to key specialist journals and an extensive range of online materials.
