University of Southampton
Southampton Law School has an international reputation for excellence in education and research. The Law School is part of the University of Southampton, a leading research-intensive Russell Group University, ranked in the global top 100 Universities (2020) QS World University Rankings).
Southampton Law School has been delivering high-quality legal education for over 60 years. In that time, we have welcomed, engaged and challenged generations of international students, and watched with great pride as they have progressed to successful careers in countries around the world. Our graduates have gone on to work in top law firms and industry, in government, professional services and in education. LLM degree, while taught, also promotes excellent legal research skills, and provides a solid foundation for further study at PhD level.
The University has a vibrant and diverse international student community of over 6,500 students from more than 135 countries. Support for our students is available from the beginning of the semester, from our intensive international welcome programme, and continuing with the year-round international student support provided by the Law School.
Our teaching is research-led which means that the academics teaching you are actively researching the current legal issues arising in their field of expertise, ensuring that your modules are not only well taught, rigorous and challenging and but are also fully engaged with contemporary problems and legal solutions.
Our academics are shaping the legal discourse and developments across the discipline in fields such as maritime law, commercial and corporate law, international law and human rights as well as technology law, amongst others. Our modules are about more than law ‘in the books’ and are concerned with exploring and understanding law in practice, as it impacts everyday society, both nationally and across the globe.
Our LLM students are encouraged to fully integrate into the Law School community, through attendance at and participation in its research seminars, invited lectures, workshops and conferences, some of which are generated by the various journals we edit. These events are led by academics, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners, giving students the opportunity to network with key players from academia, legal practice and industry.
You will also benefit from our excellent facilities including the law collection at the Hartley Library, the Philippa Kaye law library within the Institute of Maritime Law, a active mooting programme and a dedicated Moot Courtroom.
Meet our Law academics and hear them talk about the modules they teach on the LLM.
The majority of the teaching is in seminars, offering you the chance to participate actively in your modules and making for a vibrant learning environment. Overall, the School provides a welcoming, supportive environment fostering strong engagement between academics and students. We also offer a range of pastoral and academic support services.
