Citizens Advice Milton Keynes opened by HRH The Princess Royal
May 2026 saw the official opening of the Citizens Advice Bureau in Milton Keynes by HRH The Princess Royal.
The occasion provided an opportunity to celebrate the collaboration between Buckingham Law School and Citizens Advice Milton Keynes – highlighting the vital role that clinical legal education plays in student development and community support.
The Citizens Advice Clinic forms part of a Level 6 optional module for full-time and part-time University of Buckingham Law School LLB students, contributing 30 academic credits towards their degree. Participating in this practical experience alongside academic study is a great example of how Buckingham Law School prepares students for professional legal practice.
Dean of Law, Professor Adolfo Paolini outlined the structure of the LLB, explaining that Buckingham Law School supports the training of up to 20 student volunteers each year to work as assessors at the Milton Keynes Bureau. Students are supervised in clinic by Training & Volunteering Manager, Zach Eaton with Buckingham Law School lecturer Julie O’Shea, leading the academic assessments and lectures. HRH The Princess Royal showed a particular interest in how the clinic is embedded within the Law School’s curriculum.
At the official opening ceremony, Julie O’Shea spoke about the wide range of practical skills students develop through the clinic, including client interviewing, case management and the discipline of maintaining accurate and professional case notes. Honing these skills equips students with the competencies and professional values expected in the sector.
Buckingham Alumna Isabel Ritchie also shared details of her experience at the clinic, explaining how it inspired her to pursue the LLM with SQE1 Preparation Programme. She emphasised that the clinic both strengthened her legal skills and instilled a deep appreciation for ethical practice and the responsibilities of regulated legal work.
HRH The Princess Royal was interested in the impact of the clinic and noted that, over the past four years, the programme has attracted more than 40 student participants, supporting up to 6,000 client calls. These figures highlight the benefit of this initiative in both enhancing student employability and making a meaningful contribution to the local and wider Citizens Advice community.
