Professional courses
We're the only Russell Group university in the UK to offer a wide range of professional legal training courses for those who wish to become a solicitor or barrister.
We think our Solicitors Practice Course is the best way to prepare you for the centralised SQE. Not only will you be taught the areas assessed in the SQE, but you’ll also be working at a master’s level and will undertake a research project where you will learn how to write, critically reason, engage with your readers and reflect on your experience.
Supporting your employability
From the minute you join us, your future is our priority. We provide a dedicated law Careers Manager who is based in the school 2.5 days per week. This means that once you’re a student with us, you can book confidential appointments whenever you’re ready to start talking about your plans. Our Careers Manager can help with CVs, applications, LinkedIn, preparing for interviews and much more. The support we offer and our commitment to your future career is reflected in consistently high employability rates.
Turning skills into practice - pro bono
In addition to the careers advice and support we offer you can also take advantage of hands-on practical experience as a postgraduate student via our range of pro bono schemes.
Volunteering on the schemes can give you the opportunity to help members of the community with legal matters, completely free of charge. Working with lawyers and a variety of organisations, you’ll get a head start in your legal career by developing skills in client care, legal research, writing and public speaking by working on real and simulated cases, and policy work.
You’ll be supervised by qualified solicitors in areas of law and practice which have included environmental regulation, miscarriages of justice, support for people with learning disabilities, family law, representation for asylum seekers and recovery of wrongly paid care home fees.
The schemes change each term depending on supervisory resource, capacity and funding but there is something for everyone depending on which area of law is of interest to you.
Jack studied at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels with us and was a huge advocate for pro bono schemes.
"I think the main selling point [of pro bono] is the exposure that you have to different areas of law and particularly niche practice areas that you wouldn’t necessarily come across in an ordinary high street law firm.”
