7 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Miss Campus Socials As An LLM Student

You might wonder if you’d ever really get a chance to indulge in social activities while you’re on a tightly-packed LLM course. You’re probably also thinking – wouldn't it be better if I spent the time on study/research instead? While you’re absolutely right in thinking that, you might want to think again before shrugging off the socials that come your way! Social activities that are held on or off-campus can play a HUGE advantage in boosting your confidence and study goals, and helping you to make the most out of your law school experience. Still doesn’t make sense? They will make a lot more sense PROVIDED that your aim is not just to binge on free alcohol but instead to meet new people, catch up with faculty, ask what other course-mates are up to and most importantly, share ideas about future career goals or potential PhD topics. And don’t forget, both domestic and international students can benefit from these events.

Here are top reasons why you should engage in campus social events. You don’t have to go to every event – just those that you think will be both fun and interesting.

7 REASONS:

1. MEET PEOPLE FROM OTHER SPECIALISMS

You may have met several interesting students during induction sessions at the beginning of the semester, but you don’t get to see them again once they opt for other courses. Socials are your chance to re-connect! Another plus is that you may find them applying to the same law firm as you or writing a dissertation on a topic similar to yours. This can lead to meaningful interactions!

2. GET INVITED TO VOLUNTEER FOR CAUSES/EVENTS

You may find yourself talking to organisers of these events or students working with NGOs/research groups/journal editorial boards. If you show interest, you could get invited to their activities and bump up your CV credentials while you are studying!

3. INITIATE NEW PLANS FOR THE CAMPUS

You are likely to meet other students with common interests in developing student-related activities on campus. This can enable you to share your own ideas and experiences to improve facilities on campus and interact with staff.

4. START A STUDY/DISCUSSION GROUP

Again, if you end up meeting other students over drinks or food you could discuss common topics and probably start a discussion or common-interest groups. This can foster long-term associations and contacts.

5. CHANCE TO ATTEND OTHER SOCIALS

You will surely find people chatting about other social events on campus. See if they interest you and save the date!

6. YOUR TIME TO PARTY AFTER A HARD DAYS’ WORK

So that students get to have a break during peak study-times, student reps/course managers may arrange club nights at venues outside campus. This is your chance to go clubbing with your classmates to a fancy local lounge/disco!

7. EXCHANGE CONTACT DETAILS

Several events take place at the beginning, during and at the end of a semester- for instance, before you go off on Christmas break or before your dissertation work begins. This is a good time to exchange numbers and emails with other colleagues and keep in touch with them to interact on study issues. You could also end up planning a quick outing or a weekend get-away!

CAMPUS SOCIAL EVENTS USUALLY INCLUDE…

Food + drinks party organised by your course programmers also known as term parties.

Postgraduate law society events – worth your while!

Student union events.

Career events that are followed by informal sessions.

Parties or dinner receptions marking end of a conference or discussion series.

Events organised by the college in external venues

These are probably some of the most common events that you would come across during your LLM study time. So keep checking bulletin boards and read those emails for more information. Some events may require an entry charge (at student rates) but they could still be worth attending because of the potential opportunities they hold!
