Lashan Martin is a 31-year-old student from The Bahamas studying an LLM in International Commercial and Maritime Law at Swansea University.
Speaking about our Global LLM Study Bursaries worth £500, Lashan recalls, “I was very impressed and excited when I applied a while back.” However because there was quite a lot of time between applying and being awarded one of the coveted bursaries, when she finally received the good news Lashan was very surprised. “The announcement came unexpectedly! I am grateful for the opportunity and funding towards my education.”
Her choice of LLM program reflects one of her home country's main areas of interest, as she explains, “The Bahamas is a Caribbean country classified as an archipelago, a chain of 700 islands and cays within the Atlantic Ocean. Thus, there is a vast array of opportunities within The Bahamas' Maritime Industry which boasts the seventh largest shipping registry in the world.”
Further explaining her study inspiration, Lashan says, “I am very patriotic and have always sought ways to bring my country up to par and protect its borders and the best way to effect change is via the law. Therefore, I've acquired an interest in The Bahamas' shipping reputation and marine resources as an archipelagic state as defined by the United Nation Convention on the Law of the Sea.”
Lashan is really enjoying her Master of Laws course so far, finding the course content ideal for her future career aspirations. She enthuses, “I am enjoying my course, the modules are of particular interest as they directly aligned with my future plans with The Bahamas Maritime Authority. They are detailed, the cases are interesting and statutes assist me in making comparisons regarding relevant legislative instruments in The Bahamas.”
She continues, “Not only am I fascinated by local shipping, but as an advocate for humanity and the environment, global shipping is also of the utmost importance. Therefore, my module selections are also geared towards international guidelines regulating the shipping industry. I'm determined to assist in boosting the reputation of The Bahamas' Maritime Industry which is the third largest contributor to the national Gross Domestic Product.”
It’s clear that Swansea University is the ideal choice for Lashan to study her LLM program as it boasts a wide selection of maritime courses and modules, taught by experienced and qualified lecturers. She is really pleased with her choice of university, saying, “The atmosphere in Swansea is welcoming making it easy to settle into a new environment. The location is ideal as it is not as fast paced and everything is within reach.”

“I am so thrilled to have a bursary of £500 to help towards my studies!”
Gail John lives in Wales whilst studying a Master of Laws of England and Wales at Leeds Beckett University via distance learning. She chose to study this LLM program because it is a combined Graduate Diploma in Law Conversion and Masters Research Degree in one, and after a considerable amount of research this course at Leeds Beckett University stood out to Gail from all the rest in terms of its quality and higher standard of GDL qualification.

Online study is an ideal option for Gail, as she has an incredibly busy lifestyle in Wales that includes caring responsibilities for her elderly mother and online work as an international teacher in China, as well as her work supporting others with advocacy. She explains, “I required a law degree that would fit around my work and family commitments I already knew the tremendous benefits of online learning from a teacher's point of view, so I sought to access these benefits for myself through studying an online masters law degree at Leeds Beckett University.”
Speaking about her study experiences so far, Gail says, “I absolutely love the course at Leeds Beckett University. In fact, I love the course so much that my enthusiasm has rubbed off on others too, as a few people I know both locally and internationally want to enrol on the course now.” Describing the course in more detail, she explains, “The course is of an extremely high standard and I speak from the point of view of having several postgraduate qualifications and experiences at different universities across both England and Wales. The lecturers at Leeds Beckett work extremely hard to provide a successful multi-sensory learning experience for all students which is tailor-made to accelerate individual learning potential.”
Highlights of the course so far for Gail include the 24/7 library where the most up-to-date books are always accessible day or night, the exciting interactive online activities which are designed to encourage lively debate about current issues with fellow students, the comprehensive online recorded lectures which can be revisited and replayed at any time if overlearning of complex concepts is required by students of different abilities. She has also found that the tutors at Leeds Beckett University work extremely hard at submitting detailed assessment feedback to help students to learn as much as possible from their assignments.
Gail decided to study this LLM/conversion course after completing her doctorate at the University of Sheffield. The research she undertook whilst studying her doctorate examined educational exclusion and social inequality, and she found that many individuals who had been educationally failed at school ended up as either miscarriages of justice victims or in the criminal justice system without a voice. These findings led to Gail’s passion to secure justice for the oppressed which in turn led her to apply for the law course – and now she has the extra funding from us to help fuel her passion and get the qualification she needs.
Gail is clearly a very driven student and we're sure she is going to do well in her LLM studies this academic year.
