Law School Admissions

Go LLM Banner

Gaining admission into the university of your choice to study your Master of Laws can be a tricky affair. However, what is more important than gaining admission to the perfect university of your choice is selecting the most suitable course. It would be a waste of time to gain admission to a top ranking, reputable university, to study an LLM degree that you know is not right for you. Therefore it is important that you do your research properly and make sure the both the university and the LLM course are right for you. This will definitely facilitate your learning and educational progress.

Make the grade

The admission process for an LLM program is reasonably straightforward, in the sense that most institutions or universities have set criteria or requirement for admitting students, many of which are stated on the university’s website or brochure. For instance, some universities require that students possess a 1st/2:1 degree grades; anything lower than the set grade might result in a rejection; however, in some cases, the university admits students with lower grades on their discretion, where the student has shown immense capability.

Market yourself

Therefore, marketing yourself effectively in your application is key, especially in your LLM personal statement. Most universities require that you write a personal statement, stating why you want to study the LLM course. It is of utmost importance that you take advantage of the personal statement section, to stipulate your accomplishments, for example any astounding extra-curricular activities like being president of the Student Union or volunteering with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau. Likewise, highlight any impressive skills you have gained which are relevant to your education. For instance, teamwork is a great skill relevant to your LLM, you will undoubtedly work in groups with other students in your class; you can highlight where you practiced the skill i.e. camping, participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s award, volunteering and so on.After making sure, you meet the grades requirement, it is important to state that grades alone might not secure your place at the university, reason being, that a large number of students will also be vying to get accepted on the course. As a result, the university committee or board will filter applications, choosing the most suitable candidates. Just like in the job market, employers constantly filter CVs and job applications, only selecting candidates who have ‘marketed’ themselves effectively, by maximising their strengths, achievements and successes.

Admissions

Collate your credentials

Once you have written your personal statement, you need to collate your credentials which include your university undergraduate degree transcript, official degree certificate, personal statement, references and other requested documents. The reference section showcases how much you’ve impressed people, this includes employers and university lecturers; they will write a reference based on their judgment or assessment of you. Therefore references are a crucial part of your application.

Impress at an interview

Some universities require that students come for interviews; this helps them to assess your oral communication skills, personality and interpersonal skills. Therefore, it is vital to make a good first impression, by dressing smartly and formally.

Prepare well in advance

Although the LLM application process is straightforward, but it can be time consuming. It is better to have prepared beforehand and way before the deadline of the applications to avoid last minute disappointments. Don’t wait to the last minute before contacting your employers or university lecturers to write a reference; this is a costly mistake as they could have gone on vacation, busy or having little to no time to write a reference. Therefore timing is important in the application process.

We suggest that you begin to prepare months or even a year before the deadline of the law course, this will give you time to collate all the required documents and write an impressive personal statement, as opposed to writing it a night before the deadline, where you might miss out or forget to input important achievements as you in a hurry to beat the deadline.
