Summary
LLM International Energy & Environmental Law (IEEL) aims to provide you with a critical understanding of current issues relating to energy and environmental policy and regulation at an international level. The course introduces you to key international legal principles and frameworks regulating the energy sector and considers their application to global energy industries at a moment when the international community is seeking to address the challenges of climate change.
The Course adopts a ‘reflective’ approach. It provides you with a fundamental understanding of the adaptations in international investment framework and different regulatory approaches to traditional, yet still important forms of energy entering a transitional stage, such as coal, oil and gas (sunset energy sources). It also places significant emphasis upon the regulation of renewable and more sustainable energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal and hydrogen (sunrise energy sources) as well as the use of novel technologies to mitigate climate change risk, such as carbon capture and storage. The Course covers other, low-carbon energy sources such as nuclear energy in this transitional environment.
