Are you still contemplating whether to finally study that Masters of Laws degree and if it is the right time for you to study an LLM?
If you are, then the short answer is ‘Yes, you should!’
Measures have finally been taken to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, and as the world continues to return to normal, 2022 is the perfect time to study an LLM program.
Here are some of the reasons why it is the perfect time to study an LLM.
1. Specialise in your area of law
Learning is a never-ending process, especially in a field such as the law, requiring in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects. As a lawyer, you will rely heavily on your analytical abilities, creative problem solving and an endless list of related skills. To further your career, you may well need to specialise in one undertaking, and what better way to do so than through LLM, which offers popular and in-demand specialisations such as Corporate Law, Criminal Law, Business Law and International Law. If you specialise in Corporate Law, for instance, you will have brilliance at legitimacies of all contract types and policies for businesses and companies raising your levels of expertise.
2. Take advantage of funding available
The pandemic has had adverse effects on the livelihood of many people. For this reason, many different organisations, companies, universities and law schools have set up new scholarships to help students with limited funding. There are also some private loans companies, such as Prodigy Finance, who specialise in helping students, they offer tailor-made funding to international LLM students to help cover their tuition fees. These are given to LLM students without any collateral or co-signer needed, but always make sure you can meet the repayment terms before entering into a loans contract. The governments of most countries, such as the UK, also offer some postgraduate funding in the form of scholarships and bursaries that you can apply for depending on where you are from and where you are studying. Do some research online to see if there is any suitable LLM funding available for you. Also don’t forget that once you have been offered a place on an LLM program you will be eligible to apply for a Global LLM Study Bursary worth £500 towards your tuition fees.
3. Network and increase your portfolio
As you advance in your career, you are guaranteed to meet law enthusiasts from all walks of life. Through interactions with your peers, professors and other professionals, you will be able to raise your profile, get career advice and support, and who knows, you might land a job opportunity thanks to your networking skills! While studying your LLM your university or law school will host legal events during your LLM studies, such as career talks and networking events organised by legal associations such as European Law Students’ Association (ELSA). As an LLM student you can attend such events and start your networking journey.
4. Work and study at the same time
The years 2020 and 2021 have seen virtual meetings and studies being finally embraced worldwide. If you want to advance your career by taking an LLM degree but are worried about time since you still need to work to make ends meet, or simply because you don’t want to pause your career for a year, online study may well mean you can finally have it all! Apply for an online LLM program and attend your dream university whilst working, regardless of distance.
5. Study and work abroad
Did you know that studying LLM can enable you to pursue your career as a global practitioner? Since the pandemic, most countries are now deemed safe and are allowing foreigners to tour or relocate there, and by 2022, things will be even better. So, look into studying your LLM abroad. For example, if you decide to specialise in International Law, you can choose to study in an extensive list of countries to which it applies. In addition, you will be able to perfect your language while enjoying the culture and atmosphere of your dream country.
6. Get a better pay grade
We tend to assume that the higher the level of education the higher the salary that you can command – and this chart showing the average monthly lawyer’s fee in Germany according to their level of academic qualifications, illustrates that this is the case.
The more educated you are, the better and higher your remuneration will be due to your increased expertise in the field. It is finally time for you to start earning what you deserve, so get yourself this additional degree in an average period of one to two years and open the door to better opportunities.
To become a better law practitioner, you don’t necessarily need additional courses such as a Master of Laws degree, but it will certainly help. So, if you are fit for the opportunity, take that leap of faith, begin your preparations and send in your application; what better time to pursue your dreams is there than now?
