University of Buckingham extends PG law portfolio
The University of Buckingham’s postgraduate law portfolio now includes two distinctive and forward-looking pathways.
The first, delivered in collaboration with BARBRI, prepares students holistically for entry into legal practice. The second, developed and delivered with Buckingham’s Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies (BUCSIS), equips students to tackle global legal challenges at the intersection of law, security and diplomacy.
The LLM Law with SQE1 Preparation is designed to equip students with the confidence, skills and strategic insight needed not only to succeed in the SQE1 assessment, but to stand out in practice. Over a 12-month course, students develop advanced critical thinking and specialist knowledge through elective modules, whilst simultaneously undertaking BARBRI’s rigorous SQE1 preparation and completing an independent research project on a topic of their choice.
Weekly one-to-one coaching session support students in integrating these three strands of learning and empower them to track their professional development against the SRA’s (Solicitor’s Regulation Authority’s) Statement of Solicitor Competence. Buckingham’s small group, interactive teaching model and diverse practice-oriented assessment methods ensures the development of a broad skill set, including those assessed at SQE2.
This holistic approach goes beyond exam preparation to ensure that graduates are practice-ready, and equipped with the depth of knowledge, confidence and critical insight needed to distinguish themselves in a competitive market. Students can opt to graduate with a specialisation in corporate law, financial law or public international law.
In contrast, the LLM in International Law, Security and Diplomacy provides an interdisciplinary route covering subjects ranging from international humanitarian law and human rights to foreign policy, diplomacy and global security. It is particularly suited to those aspiring to careers in government ministries, international organisations, or intelligence and global civil service roles.
Buckingham’s intensive teaching module combines small group, research-led learning with the expertise of both the Law School and BUCSIS. This approach fosters academic rigour and builds capacity to assess and respond to complex, fast-evolving security challenges. Students are trained to engage critically with advanced scholarship, undertake rigorous independent research, and develop high-level communication and collaborative skills required to operate effectively in demanding professional environments.
