Legal team at Legal Advice Centre at Nottingham Law School expands
Nottingham Law School's Legal Advice Centre has appointed two new legal assistants. This will be of great benefit to the local community of people in Nottingham that would not normally be able to afford legal advice.
The two new assistants – Callum Scott and Brogan Roache – are both former Nottingham Trent University students. The student advisers at Nottingham’s Legal Advice Centre are supervised by in-house solicitors and provide legal services in a areas, including employment, housing, welfare rights and intellectual property. In 2015 over 230 Nottingham Law School students worked on 185 cases.
It is the only Free Representation Unit (FRU) outside London, and it also provides the local community with free representation in employment and social security tribunals.
Brogan and Callum both volunteered in the Legal Advice Centre when they were students, and will now be taking on FRU and Legal Advice Centre cases themselves. Brogan says, “After helping the people in my local community who needed assistance when they had nowhere else to turn, I know that I will get a feeling of reward and satisfaction from the work that I undertake within the Centre." Brogan completed the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) at Nottingham Trent University, and wants to become a barrister.
Callum explains, "I am looking forward to renewing links with external legal partners in Nottingham, as I have had personal experience of the benefits they bring to the Legal Advice Centre and to the student advisors themselves." Callum studied Chemistry before gaining a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).
The Legal Advice Centre recently won the 2016 Nottinghamshire Law Society Contribution to the Community Award. It was set up in 2006 and relaunched in new premises in 2014.
