Birkbeck School of Law in the media
Birkbeck’s School of Law is a leading international centre for world-class legal research and scholarship. The School provides a range of innovative Masters degrees and hosts a flourishing community of students engaged in graduate research.
All members of teaching staff carrying out multidisciplinary research in exciting and innovative areas. The academic staff are recognised leaders and experts in their fields, and are particularly well known for addressing legal issues from a critical and sociolegal perspective. The School's staff are frequently called upon to comment on national and international events. For example, Professor Patrick McAuslan recently wrote for The Daily Telegraph about troops in Afghanistan, and Professor Bill Bowring has written an article about legal nihilism in Russia for openDemocracy.
Other recent media contributions include:
Daniel Monk’s article, ‘Regulating Home Education: Negotiating Standards, Anomalies and Rights’ (2009) Child and Family Law Quarterly 21 (2): 155–184, was quoted from at the House of Commons Children, Schools and Families Select Committee on Monday 12 October. The question as to whether, and if so how, home education should be regulated is highly controversial and legislation is likely in the future.
- Costas Douzinas' latest article on the Greek elections in The Guardian's Comment is Free section, 4 October 2009.
- Interview with Bill Bowring on the BBC World Service on the murder of Natasha Estemirova in Chechnya (16 July 2009) – second item on the programme.
- Daniel Monk has written about the criminalisation of the sexual transmission of HIV in Radical Philosophy (July 2009).
