International students studying Canadian LLMs need to be well prepared
The Canadian Foreign Service Strike is starting to impact on international students who are now being urged to apply for their study visas “Well In Advance”.
Canadian Foreign Service officers, including diplomats and consular officers, have been on a ‘rotating strike’ at several Canadian missions and offices abroad since April 2013.
The ongoing strike over equal pay is said to have caused a backlog of visa applications and delays in visa processing, raising concerns that international students needing visas to study in Canada this autumn might face delays.
It is important to note that visas to Canada are still being processed and issued, albeit with some delays in certain locations, as the Canadian government is working hard to fill the gaps created by the striking officers so that students scheduled to start classes in September can start on time.
If you are an international student who has already submitted a visa application to study in Canada this autumn – September/October 2013 – and you have not received a response within the usual stated processing time, it is advisable to contact the university to inform them of the situation. You might find that you are not the only student facing this challenge, and your university should be able to offer you advice.
If you are an international student hoping to start your LLM program in autumn 2014 the Canadian Citizen and Immigration website is asking that you submit your visa application well in advance. It is also encouraging students to apply for their student visas online, saying that “this will give the CIC the flexibility to move applications to offices with the capacity to handle them.”
