Kent Law School lecturer is Law Teacher of the Year
Dr Karen Devine from Kent Law School has been named Law Teacher of the Year 2012 in a national award sponsored by Oxford University Press. This is a major achievement for Dr Devine, plus it is the third consecutive year that a teacher from Kent has reached the final.
The £3,000 award, launched in 2004, is aimed at rewarding achievement in teaching and recognising the vital role that teachers play in the education of tomorrow's lawyers.
The Law Teacher of the Year award relies on fellow teachers and students to send in their nominations. The 2012 shortlisted candidates were selected on the basis of criteria which included demonstrated commitment to, and support for, the development of students as individuals. Another key selection criterion was the display of an active interest in the development of teaching that influences, motivates and inspires students to learn.
Dr Devine joined the University of Kent as a lecturer in September 2010 and her research interests lie primarily in the area of medical law and ethics. Speaking of her award she says, “I am extremely honoured to be chosen as Law Teacher of the Year amongst such wonderful shortlisted candidates and to have had the opportunity to showcase Kent Law School. This was very much a team effort – from the fantastic staff that have taught and inspired me over the years, and to my students past and present; particularly those at the Medway campus who fed into the judging process. They really did me proud.”
Professor Rosemary Hunter, Acting Head of Kent Law School, comments, “On behalf of all the staff and students at Kent Law School, I congratulate Karen on this very well-deserved award. Karen is a valued member of the School who has worked tirelessly to support, encourage and inspire her students. This award is a very fitting recognition for all of her efforts.”
