New LLM Conflict and Security Law
International terrorism. Armed conflict. Arms control. These major concerns affect a world in need of change. Taught jointly between the University of Utrecht and Sheffield Law School, this is a unique one-year LLM degree examining conflict and security law, incorporating a period of study abroad. The entire programme is taught in English.
Two acclaimed academics with strong international reputations, Professor Nigel White from Sheffield and Professor Eric Myjer from Utrecht, both co-editors of the Oxford University Press Journal of Conflict and Security Law, are course directors of this innovatory postgraduate programme.
Focusing on public international law in the context of conflict and security, the programme encompasses the laws of collective security, peacekeeping, arms control, international terrorism and humanitarian armed conflict. It examines in depth how the law works within the various stages of conflict from its pre- and initial stages through to post-conflict, peacekeeping and peace-building. One semester is spent in Utrecht and one semester in Sheffield.
Ambassador Maarten Lak, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons: 'I welcome this much needed programme. There is a strong demand for young, legally trained people specialised in arms control and non-proliferation, who can support the extensive international circuits operating in The Hague, Geneva, Vienna and New York… My Permanent Representation already exchanges views with this programme’s teaching and research staff.'
Utrecht University is ranked first in the Netherlands and is a 30-minute train ride from the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and many other international institutions in the Hague. Brussels, Paris and Geneva are just a few hours away. Students are therefore provided with excellent links, visits and contacts to help them through the course and in their subsequent careers.
