Swansea fosters academic exchange with Nigeria
The historical ties between Nigeria and Swansea University continue to be fostered as more Nigerian nationals chose to pursue their studies at the well-regarded Welsh university. During a recent visit to Nigeria in the summer of 2008, Professor Rhidian Thomas (Director of the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law) gave a guest lecture at the 10th Maritime Seminar for Judges, organised by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Transport and Nigerian Shipping Council in collaboration with the National Judicial Institution.
Professor Thomas discussed legal and practical implications of the new UNCITRAL Convention on Carriage of Goods by Sea.
The event was held in Abuja, attracting delegates from the judiciary and legal practice, which included a number of highly successful Nigerian practitioners who had completed their LLM degrees at Swansea and now hold important positions in legal spheres.
Today, Nigerian students continue to come to Swansea, enriching the history shared between the University and the West African nation.
