Sydney Law School professor appointed chair of UN committee
Professor Ron McCallum - the former Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Sydney - has been appointed Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2010. Professor McCallum’s election took place on Friday 23rd October in Geneva, Switzerland.
A joint media release issued by the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland MP, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Stephen Smith MP and the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, Bill Shorten MP says, ‘Professor McCallum’s appointment complements Australia’s commitment to upholding and safeguarding the rights of people with disabilities and to ensuring that they are treated equitably.
‘The appointment also underlines the Government’s commitment to engage positively on the international stage. Australia was one of the first Western countries to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
‘The Government is confident that Professor McCallum will continue to make a valuable and effective contribution in this important new role.’
