Utrecht University researchers receive prestigious human rights award
Two human rights researchers have been awarded the first and second Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award 2008 for their dissertation works. Antoine Buyse and Gentian Zyberi were presented the award which is an annual incentive prize presented to young and promising thinkers who carry out research in the field of human rights. The award for the best Master’s thesis in the field of human rights also went to Utrecht this year, namely to master student Renée van Eijl.
In his thesis ‘Post-conflict housing restitution: The European human rights perspective, with a case study on Bosnia and Herzegovina’, Antoine Buyse studied how refugees from Bosnia-Herzegovina handle the construction of their country after the war. This year the award for the best thesis was shared in a first and second prize. The second prize went to Gentian Zyberi for his thesis ‘The humanitarian face of the international court of justice. Its contribution to interpreting and developing international human rights and humanitarian law rules and principles’, for which he received his PhD doctorate in April 2008 at Utrecht University.
